TCL, a leading global consumer electronics brand and the World’s No. 1 Mini LED TV brand, has filed suit against Samsung Electronics in a U.S. federal court in Los Angeles over claims that a range of Samsung televisions sold under the “M Model” name were marketed as Mini LED products despite not actually using the technology.
According to court filings, the disputed televisions were built on Samsung’s existing standard LED platform rather than incorporating the backlight architecture that defines true Mini LED displays. TCL contends that labelling these sets as Mini LED gave consumers a false impression of the picture performance they were purchasing, particularly around contrast and dynamic range, two areas where Mini LED technology is designed to outperform conventional LED panels.
Commenting on the filing, R.C. Harlan, attorney for TCL, said in a statement filed as part of the lawsuit, “Samsung’s false advertising misled consumers who wanted the higher picture quality associated with Mini LED televisions into buying a falsely labelled product, unfairly damaging TCL’s sales, goodwill, and valuable technology in the process.”
TCL’s filing states that its Mini LED technology delivers substantially better picture quality, with greater dynamic range and higher contrast ratios, than conventional LED displays. The filing further states that the company built its leadership in the U.S. Mini LED television category between 2023 and 2025 on the strength of its technology and pricing, and alleges that Samsung’s M Model launch, introduced earlier this year at price points below TCL’s own Mini LED range, drew on that market position without offering the underlying technology associated with it.
TCL has asked the U.S. court to prohibit Samsung from continuing to describe the M Model televisions as Mini LED products, and is separately seeking financial damages, with the amount to be determined through the legal process.
Beyond this litigation, TCL remains focused on advancing its Mini LED, QD-Mini LED and SQD-Mini LED display technologies, and reaffirms its commitment to giving consumers accurate, dependable information about the products they buy, in the UAE and in every market TCL serves.
